Young people, it’s wonderful to be young!
Enjoy every minute of it. Do everything you want to do;
take it all in. But remember that
you must give an account to God for everything you do.
Several years ago I taught the Bible book of Ecclesiastes to a group of eighth-graders. It took me a few minutes to get the class to quiet down when we came to chapter 11, verse 9: They started celebrating as soon as they read the first part. “Look! The Bible says because we’re young we’re supposed to do everything we want!” the entire classes shouted at me. Once I got them to calm down, I asked them to read the second part of the verse aloud together: “But remember that you must give an account to God for everything you do.” Once they had finished the verse, the celebrating stopped. They realized that while God wants us to have fun, He also wants us to remember that some day, when we stand in front of Him, we will have to give an explanation for everything we have done.
Being a teenager is an exciting time. The world is wide open to you; the opportunities to have fun are almost limitless. God wants you to enjoy your life and all that it has to offer. Remembering that some day God will ask you to explain the things you did in your life can serve as a great motivator to focus on enjoying the things in life that honor God and His name.
